Búsqueda del mínimo global en superficies de energía potencial de clústeres atómicos y moleculares mediante algoritmos evolutivos acoplados a la teoría del funcional de la densidad.

Diseño y análisis de especies con enlaces no convencionales, como carbonos planos hipercoordinados, estrellas moleculares y motivos tubulares de boro.

Algunas moléculas desafían las reglas clásicas del enlace: carbonos con cuatro o cinco vecinos en un mismo plano, anillos aromáticos con metales o estructuras tubulares de boro. Entender por qué son estables permite diseñar nuevas especies y proponerlas como objetivos experimentales.
Esta línea combina la exploración de superficies de energía potencial con herramientas de análisis del enlace químico y de aromaticidad (deslocalización electrónica, orbitales naturales y respuesta magnética) para explicar la estabilidad de estos sistemas.
Buena parte de este trabajo se ha hecho en colaboración con grupos de química teórica de México, China y América Latina.
